Our very own Eleanor McColl was exhibiting at the Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong last month and I went along to the opening event. El has been working on a new series of oil paintings; her first for a couple of years and displayed an impressive 10 paintings at the art fair. El is well known for her Hong Kong based work; and this series focuses on aspects of Hong Kong life; a bright flash of umbrellas in a tropical downpour; a shopkeeper weighing a fish; a cafe table; washing hanging out to dry from a high rise apartment building. Her work is rooted in place, inspired by the environment of dilapidation and renewal that is so evocative of Hong Kong. Her next artistic stretch is to explore other countries and other urban environments, so watch this space! We bumped into several old friends at the art fair, including Bodinker artists Leanne Claxton and Assia Bennani. Szabotage was also exhibiting, and Riya Chandiramani gave a very moving presentation about her life and work. El was somewhat surprised to see her old friend 'Ham Hockney' aka the pigs she painted for the Sovereign Art Foundation. If you like the pig, you can buy the tattoo here!
